Greetings from the Founder,

Dennis Kennedy

Dennis KennedyAs the founder of the National Diversity Council, I would like to welcome you to the first edition of the 2013 DMV Diversity Council Newsletter. We are very excited about the upcoming year and the events we have planned for our community. Our most popular undertaking continues to be the Women in Leadership Symposium, held annually. It has evolved over the years as meeting ground for innovative women to shape the face of leadership in their organizations.

Opening Eyes and Hearts through Interactive Diversity Drama

Charlotte HamlinFor many years when leading a diversity presentation, I saw shuttered faces, crossed arms and defensive posture of participants who appeared to expect to learn little of value to change their thinking or behavior in any way. Despite my background in psychology and effort to use engaging and non-threatening exercises, audiences were resistant to exploring “diversity” and sharing personal experiences of cultural misunderstanding or discriminatory behavior.

Student Spotlight-Re-Evaluating Your Company’s LGBT Practices

Charlotte HamlinMany companies are assessing if their corporate environment is lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) appropriate is by creating an atmosphere of welcoming, as opposed to one of tolerance. What is the difference? According to the article, “Creating a Welcoming Environment for Gay Employees” by Brian McNaught, though tolerance is not a bad thing, it can be interpreted as impersonal and unproductive, for it may deter valuable LGBT employees from staying with a company (McNaught, 2010, n.p., para. 2).
